The Complexity of Self-Expression with Music
Self-expression is such an interesting concept. It varies from person to person, and it changes constantly over time. There are countless ways to express ourselves in this day and age, but one that I personally love is music.
It doesn't matter who you are, how much money you have, where you come from or what language(s) you speak; you can always find music that you like. What I find the most interesting are the artists behind the songs. I like to think of it this way: musicians are expressing their fans for them. That's where their following mainly comes from, it's the relatability of their joy, pain, fear, or whatever else they feel. If you take time to analyze some of the most popular artists, their music is generalized and contain symbolism that can be interpreted in many ways.
As an avid music listener and a singer, myself, I am drawn to music as a tool for self-expression. I think it's beautiful how it brings so many different people together. If you meet someone new, it might even be one of the first questions you ask them: "What kind of music do you like?"
Honestly what I love most is how empowering it is. You can feel so vulnerable performing a song, thinking about what it means to you in that moment, but also knowing that every single person listening is thinking about something else. Something impactful. Something that defines them. They can see your pain or your joy, and they can internalize it in a way that I don't see possible with words alone.
So... Hi, it's great to meet you! 😊 What kind of music do you like? Do your friends and family like the same genres? Who is your favorite artist right now?
Hi, great post! What I took from your post is that music is a universal language. Music is great because anyone can enjoy it and the same song can mean different things for different people. Currently I have been listening to different genres including trap music, classical music, alt-rock, classical rock, and pop.
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you, my favorite artists would be Linkin Park, Thousand foot Krutch and Mark Petrie & Andrew Prahlow. But i mainly listen to alt-rock, and rock music. I sometimes listen to classical music which surprises some of my friends since they do not expect me to listen to that genre at all.
ReplyDeleteHey Kyler! I absolutely resonated with your blog. I tend to use music as a form of expression/therapy based on what I’m feeling that moment. The sounds, rhythm, and lyrics feel intensified if I’m feeling what the song’s purpose is and it just amazes me every time how music has such a strong influence on me.
ReplyDeleteHonestly , I don't know what I'd do without music. This year I got into Indie music and occasionally still listen to R&B. My go to would be throw backs, they just hit different now. xD
ReplyDeleteI really liked you article and agree that music is one those mediums were people are able to freely express themselves. However, I do not really know how the music I listen to expresses who I am. I like any music with a good beat, melody, lyrics, or just nostalgic to me. My playlists are a mess of random songs in different languages with different genres.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your article. I agree that music expresses the type of person you are and can connect to other in that way. I really enjoy indy / alternative music and I have found people who like that type of music and now are my friends.
I really enjoyed your article and I can definitely relate to it with the fact that music isn't just something to listen to, it is also a way to convey a message with a mixture of tones and beats! My favorite type of genres are rap, edm, and hip hop.
ReplyDeleteMusic is really something I use to express my feelings. Listening to different genre of music based on my mood is something I do often. Sometimes it gives me a sign of release, music is totally a life saver!
ReplyDeleteMusic has been a huge part of my life. I'm usually listening to music when I'm studying, playing a game with some friends, or trying to sleep. My friends and family have different music tastes than I do so I don't really share music I listen to.
ReplyDeleteHey, I really liked your article on music in which I thought your introduction really helped bring the reader into what you were saying! I also don't know what I would do without music!
ReplyDeleteIts even better when you can listen to that music when you are out with your friends in public and dancing with friends and random people. hopefully time could find its way back to that so we can practice self-expression openly again lol.
ReplyDeleteLife without music would be very dull. I think that music is a great way to express yourself, in addition, its a great way to relive stress!
